FAQs

Do I need an appointment for lab tests?
An appointment is necessary.  Please call 608-957-3000 to schedule an appointment.
What information do you need when I present for lab testing at the AML draw station?
You will be asked to present your physician’s order or if you know what test you need, you will be asked to complete the order form and your identification.
Where can I learn more about the lab tests I am having?
The web site American Medical Lab has been designed to help you, as a patient or caregiver, to better understand the many clinical lab tests that are part of routine care as well as diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions and diseases.
Do I have to fast before my blood tests?
You do not have to fast unless your doctor has ordered a fasting glucose, fasting lipid panel, fasting metabolic panel, fasting cholesterol, HDL or tryglyceride.
How long should I fast?
If your doctor did not tell you how long to fast, you should not eat or drink anything for approximately 12 hours prior to the test. Fasting means you should not eat or drink any liquids except for water.
If I have to fast, can I still take regular medications?
Please consult your doctor.
I did not fast. Can I have my blood drawn anyway?
We prefer that you do not have your blood drawn. Please consult with your doctor.
Why is my doctor ordering this test?
Lab tests are done to diagnose medical conditions, for health screening and to monitor treatment.  Please consult your doctor if you have questions.
Why do I have to have this test repeated?
Your doctor may want to confirm the results for a prior test, or to monitor the status of a disease or treatment. Please discuss with your doctor.
When will my doctor get the results?
Most tests are completed in 24 hours, although some special tests may take longer.  Please call lab manager’s office for results.
Do I have to register every time I come in?
Yes, please sign in as soon as you arrive.
Can you tell me what these lab results mean?
Sorry, we cannot interpret test results.  Please speak with your doctor. We have doctors available for ordering the labs at no extra cost. Also we may have providers available for interpreting lab results, for an additional nominal cost
